AAUW NJ Celebrates Historic Victory of Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill
Sherrill will join Record Number of Women Governors Nationwide.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 1, 2025 —
The American Association of University Women of New Jersey (AAUW NJ) congratulates Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill on her decisive victory in the 2025 gubernatorial election. Governor-elect Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, becomes New Jersey’s second female governor and the state’s first Democratic woman to hold the office.
Her victory, alongside the election of Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, is particularly momentous for women’s representation across the country. These historic wins confirm that, upon their respective inaugurations, a record high of 14 women governors will hold executive office simultaneously—the largest number in U.S. history.
“Governor-elect Sherrill embodies everything the AAUW stands for: fierce leadership, commitment to increased education and opportunity for women, and the determination to shatter glass ceilings,” said Sharon Suber, President of AAUW NJ. “As a prior recipient of our prestigious ‘Woman as Agent of Change’ Award in 2021, her journey is a monumental victory for every woman and girl in New Jersey who now sees a clear path to the highest office. We are particularly encouraged by her strong support for public education, a key AAUW issue, and look forward to partnering with her administration to advance critical policies supporting women’s economic security and health.”
AAUW NJ is proud to celebrate Governor-elect Sherrill’s historic achievement, recognizing her consistent advocacy for robust public education, pay equity, reproductive freedom, and policies that empower women and girls throughout the state, aligning perfectly with AAUW’s core mission to promote equity and opportunity. Her success is a powerful testament to the impact of investing in women’s leadership and civic engagement.
The organization remains committed to working alongside the new administration to ensure a brighter, more equitable future for all New Jerseyans.
