Advancing Gender Equity
Intersectional. Inclusive. Intergenerational. Empowering.
American Association of University Women of New Jersey
Empowering Women and Girls
American Association of University Women of New Jersey is a state affiliate of AAUW, representing over 1200 members in 20 branches and 8 colleges throughout the State. Our branches and members are active across the state — from Sussex County in the North all the way to Cape May County.
We have been advocating for women and girls since 1881. AAUW has fought to remove the barriers and biases that stand in the way of gender equity, especially in the areas of education and employment. We have trained women to negotiate for pay and benefits, and to pursue leadership roles. We have advocated for federal, state and local laws and policies to ensure equity and to end gender discrimination. We are tenacious and trailblazing — we’ve led the fight for fair pay and economic opportunity for women and we are not done. The battle continues.

we Take Action
Our Public Policy Priorities
The Public Policy Principles and Priorities underscore AAUW’s mission to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. They establish principles for action on which AAUW members across the country focus their advocacy efforts. They guide the work of the AAUW’s federal priorities and that of AAUW state organizations and branches on state and local issue advocacy efforts.
AAUW positions are shaped by our commitment to equity by being nonpartisan, evidence-based, experience-driven, inclusive, and intersectional.
AAUW opposes all forms of discrimination on the basis of age, disability, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, geographical location, national origin, religious beliefs, pregnancy or parental status or socioeconomic status, and supports constitutional protection for the civil rights of all individuals.
AAUW believes in the need to end white supremacy and address structural and systemic racism. Efforts to advance racial, ethnic, and gender justice must be embedded into every policy initiative.
WE MAKE A DIFFEReNCE
AAUW takes a multipronged approach to battling the gender wage gap. A key component is arming women with the tools and resources they need to do their part. Scholarships and STEM camps remove barriers in education for women. Workshops on salary negotiation empower women in the workforce.
In New Jersey, our branches have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide scholarships to women for undergraduate and graduate degrees. We sponsor students to AAUW’s National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), where hundreds of young women come to turn a moment into a movement.
Our signature one-week, residential, hands-on STEM camp for rising eighth-grade girls, Tech Trek is held in partnership with Stockton University. The program puts AAUW’s groundbreaking Why So Few? and Solving the Equation research reports into action in a female-led, inclusive, residential university setting.
