AAUW NJ pays tribute to a fearless champion for Women of Color
— Rest in power Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver.

American Association of University Women of New Jersey (AAUW NJ) pays tribute to the life and career of Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver. AAUW’s story begins in 1881, when a small group of female college graduates banded together to open the doors for women’s career advancement and to encourage more women to pursue higher education. The history of the American Association of University Women mirrors the progress of women in the United States as does the life of LG Oliver. Much like the LG, AAUW has continued to trailblaze for women, breaking down barriers and making the world more equitable for future generations.

LG Oliver was a true pioneer. Her life’s work – from her service on the East Orange Board of Education to running for legislative office – set an example for other women to follow. As the first Black woman to serve as the Speaker of the Assembly (2010-2014) and statewide office as Lieutenant Governor (2018-2023), she exemplified courage and power. This allowed her to rise to higher levels of office than any other woman of color in the state, despite facing adversity in the male dominated world of New Jersey politics.

LG Oliver was a champion for women and believed in opening doors and creating opportunity for those who came behind her. Not one to hold back her opinion, she encouraged other women to be their authentic selves and demand respect. Her generosity of spirit is demonstrated in the stories from almost every women of color leader in the state, who all saw her as a mentor and role model.

LG Oliver will be missed but her legacy in New Jersey will undoubtedly be continued by the countless female leaders she mentored. She inspires us all as we continue the work to advance gender and racial equity in New Jersey.
