Advancing Gender Equity
Intersectional. Inclusive. Intergenerational. Empowering.
American Association of University Women of New Jersey
Empowering Women and Girls
American Association of University Women of New Jersey is a state affiliate of AAUW, representing over 1200 members in 20 branches and 8 colleges throughout the State. Our branches and members are active across the state — from Sussex County in the North all the way to Cape May County.
We have been advocating for women and girls since 1881. AAUW has fought to remove the barriers and biases that stand in the way of gender equity, especially in the areas of education and employment. We have trained women to negotiate for pay and benefits, and to pursue leadership roles. We have advocated for federal, state and local laws and policies to ensure equity and to end gender discrimination. We are tenacious and trailblazing — we’ve led the fight for fair pay and economic opportunity for women and we are not done. The battle continues.

we Take Action
Our Public Policy Priorities
Support for a strong system of public education that promotes gender fairness, equity, diversity and inclusivity, and addresses the barriers and implicit biases that hinder the advancement of women and girls. AAUW advocates for vigorous enforcement of Title IX and all other civil rights laws pertaining to education; adequate and equitable funding for and access to quality public education; strong promotion of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and comprehensive sexual health education, access to affordable higher education including alleviating the debt burden, and support for practices that halt the flow of students from schools to prisons.
Achievement of economic security for all women. AAUW advocates for pay equity and fairness in compensation and benefits, closing the gender and race gaps in leadership opportunities for women of all backgrounds, access to the full range of health care services, and a high standard of benefits and policies that promote work-life balance, including quality and affordable dependent care and paid family, medical, and sick leave.
A guarantee of equality, individual rights, and social justice for a diverse and inclusive society. AAUW advocates for vigorous enforcement of and full access to civil and constitutional rights, including affirmative action and expanding voting rights, self-determination of one’s reproductive health decisions and universal access to quality, affordable health care. We stand for freedom in the definition of self and family, including protection from discrimination and freedom from violence and fear of violence, including hate crimes, in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. We support U.N. programs that address human rights and women’s and girls’ concerns and call for passage and ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
WE MAKE A DIFFEReNCE
AAUW takes a multipronged approach to battling the gender wage gap. A key component is arming women with the tools and resources they need to do their part. Scholarships and STEM camps remove barriers in education for women. Workshops on salary negotiation empower women in the workforce.
In New Jersey, our branches have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide scholarships to women for undergraduate and graduate degrees. We sponsor students to AAUW’s National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), where hundreds of young women come to turn a moment into a movement.
Our signature one-week, residential, hands-on STEM camp for rising eighth-grade girls, Tech Trek is held in partnership with Stockton University. The program puts AAUW’s groundbreaking Why So Few? and Solving the Equation research reports into action in a female-led, inclusive, residential university setting.
